Built in 1939 by prisoners at Sachsenhausen Nazi concentration camp for the Deutsche Ausrüstungswerke (a defense contractor), this bakery supplied the camp as well as other SS units in Berlin and its surrounds. Around 80 prisoners produced up to 43,000 loaves per day, delivering Tuesdays and Fridays; 6,000 were for Sachsenhausen only.

After WWII the Russians took over the bakery, in order to keep on feeding the survivors. In 1946 it was taken over by the Konsumgenossenschaft Kreis Niederbarnim (a consumer cooperative) and run by the Konsum-Großbäckerei Oranienburg from 1948 to 1991.
