Abandoned Soviet barracks in Szentkirályszabadja
Szentkirályszabadja, Hungary
SPACE TYPE: Barrack or base
PRESERVATION STATUS: Abandoned
Tags: barracks, Hungary, military, Totally Lost 2015
This ghost town is located behind the Szentkirályszabadja airfield, on the grounds of a set of abandoned Soviet barracks and living quarters. This base included a kindergarten, an elementary school, a middle school, two restaurants, pubs, cinemas and theaters, five block of flats and another two four- storey residential buildings, sports fields, an outdoor cinema, chicken and pig farms, a meat processing plant, a vehicle repair shop, a wine cellar, a post office and grocery stores.
Everything was available on the grounds of the barracks to serve the everyday lives of the soldiers.
Since only high ranking officers and their families could leave the premises, a private who served two compulsory years abroad would mostly spend his time within the confines of these walls – where “luxurious conditions” were met according to the standards of the era.
