The railway connected Russia’s North Caucasus Railway with Georgian railways and was established during the Soviet Era. Since 2010 there is a daily train connection from the Russian Federation to Abkhazia, running from Adler to Sukhumi and returning within the day.
Prior to 2010 the Abkhazian railway had been abandoned since the War in Abkhazia in 1992. By the end of the war bridges had been blown up and many tracks dismantled.
